Riding the Growth Wave
Sound familiar? That was our theme for the SIOR Spring World
Conference in Miami, FL, and after spending a few sunny days in
Miami with SIORs from all over the world, I think it’s now fair to
say that we can expect to “Ride the Growth Wave” into the coming
years. With increased sales and leasing activity in most every market
across the country, SIORs are really coming out on top and leading
the recovery. I could not be more optimistic and proud of SIOR.
By all accounts, this year’s SIOR Spring World Conference was
a great success. Over 650 people were in attendance, representing 14 countries—bar none, our biggest, most globally represented
spring turnout in years. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in excellent educational sessions on improving their business
practices and current market trends, as well as listen to a wonderful
lineup of keynote speakers, including; William Taylor, Founding
Editor of Fast Company; ProLogis speaker Peter Guber, Chairman
and CEO of Mandalay Entertainment Group; and motivational
speaker, Michael Broome. Between beach volleyball, an art deco
tour, and the always-popular Panattoni Cocktail party, there was a
healthy dose of fun to compliment the educational programs. You

The Spring World Conference also gave SIOR headquarters the
chance to demonstrate how they are working to improve the quality
of membership. Here is a brief summary of these initiatives:
SIOR continuing to improve its digital presence. The public portion
of SIOR’s new website was launched in early 2012. The members-
only portion, called “MySIOR,” was launched at the conference pro-
viding members the opportunity to edit and enhance their profiles.
Additional features and services for MySIOR will be developed
and launched throughout the year, including, communication via an
improved message system, and communication with chapters and
committees through unique group pages.
SIOR is going mobile! For the first time, SIOR has launched a conference mobile app that replaces the printed program book—
allowing users to access session information and speaker information, the
schedule of events, exhibitor and sponsor profiles, maps, personalized schedules and more. The member response to this app was overwhelmingly positive, and I speak for all of us when I say that I am
looking forward to future conference apps. SIOR will also be creating
a membership mobile app that will act as a mobile extension of the
website and MySIOR. It will have a mobile Directory and improved
ways for members to network and communicate. Once MySIOR is
fully built out, the mobile app will go into production.
In terms of social media, SIOR has been actively working to improve
its brand presence. There has been a dramatic increase in activity
and engagement across SIOR’s social media outlets on LinkedIn,
Facebook, YouTube, Twitter (with more than 1,000 followers), and
now Google +. SIOR is continuing its excellent quarterly magazine,
Professional Report, which is now available online and on almost any
hand-held device (Apple, Android, Amazon).
The SIOR Center for Career Advancement (CCA) has scheduled
a total of seventeen seminars in 2012 on advanced sale skills, ethics and professionalism, and business strategies. SIOR is also holding three designation courses. The seminars and courses are a great
opportunity to refresh your knowledge and learn what today’s brokers are learning, as well as meet and network with incoming and
future SIOR designees.
SIOR grew by 23 members in 2011, bringing the membership to
more than 3,015. Member retention continues to remain strong
with more than 95 percent of members renewing this year. The
Chapter Recruitment Incentive program ($1000/Chapter) has been
extremely successful in enabling many chapters to host recruitment
events and attract the top professionals in their markets.
