Coming Out on Top
That was our theme for the recent SIOR Spring World Conference
in Scottsdale, AZ, and after talking with so many of our members,
I now feel that I have a true sense of where the market is headed
and how SIORs feel about the industry and their membership. With
increased sales and leasing activity in most every market across the
country, SIORs really are coming out of the recession ahead of the
This year’s spring conference was a great success by all accounts.
Nearly 600 people were in attendance, representing 11 different countries—our biggest spring conference turnout in years.
Attendees had the opportunity to participate in excellent educational sessions on improving their business practices and current
market trends, as well as the opportunity to listen to influential
keynote speakers such as ProLogis speaker Dr. George Friedman,
real estate economist Dr. Mark Dotzour, and Chicken Soup for the
Soul series author Jack Canfield. There were many opportunities
for work and play, but as always, the opportunities to network with
other qualified industrial and office real estate professionals were
limitless. The golf tournament was a sell-out, and as always, the
Panattoni Cocktail party was a huge hit.
Even though SIOR headquarters had been busy planning a successful conference, they still managed to develop and improve the
quality of membership over this past quarter.
A demo of what will be SIOR’s new website was unveiled during
the opening session of the Spring World Conference. The revised
public site and Members’ Only area (MySIOR) will go live this
fall, with an official launch in Chicago. SIOR Leadership and Staff
are excited about the improvements to member services. Some of
the highlights of the new website will be:
Individual Access—a unique username and password that provides each member with complete control over individual information and the ability to update personal information in real time
Account Information—members will have the ability to view
event and payment history and review all account activity.
Profiles—Enhanced member profiles, with the ability for members
to control what information is displayed, such as bios, photos, work
experience, credentials, etc.
Member Search—An enhanced ‘Find a Member” (formally
Locate an SIOR) section, with the added ability to search using an
E-Mail Enhancements—Refined member messaging tool that
allows members to more easily send and receive e-mails from other
members based on specific interests. Members will be able to generate private and group e-mails based on filtered criteria.
Groups—Members will have greater access to their chapter, committee, and group information, with the ability to share information
with group members and access important documents and updates
from group leaders.

on the iPhone, iPad, and Droid phones and tablets (Blackberry
to come soon). In edition to the print and online format, you can
now download a free Professional Report app from i Tunes or the
Android Market. SIOR also has plans to develop mobile applications that will enhance your membership in the near future.
SIOR has joined other real estate industry associations in support
of the Community Recovery and Investment Act (CRIA), important legislation introduced to help incentivize equity investments
in distressed CRE assets, and to address the pending crisis threatening community banks that currently hold significant real estate
debt on their books. Richard Hollander, David Lockwood and I
just returned from the NAR mid-year meetings in Washington D.C.
where we had the opportunity to listen and be briefed on NAR’s
legislative efforts on behalf of the commercial practitioner. You
have all received the NAR legislative update which will give you
an idea of the multitude of projects that NAR is pursuing in our
